Mildmay is an international HIV+AIDS charity, specialising in care, treatment, training and service development.

As a Christian charity, they are dedicated to transforming the hopes and lives of individuals challenged by the illnesses, disability, prejudice and deprivation that HIV AIDS can bring.

Mildmay Mission Hospital was opened in 1892 on its present site in the East End of London as a memorial to a local Anglican Vicar, the Reverend William Pennefather, who with two young deaconesses, braved the 1866 cholera epidemic sweeping the area, visiting the sick and dying with a mission to heal and preach the gospel.

It became part of the NHS in 1948, but after being closed briefly, it reopened in 1985 as an independent Christian charitable hospital.

In 1988, it opened Europe's first AIDS hospice unit in its London hospital and by 2006, its services had extended beyond the UK to Eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.

The statistics for HIV/AIDS are stark

  • 33.2 million global HIV+AIDS population
  • 90% are in developing countries
  • 15-24 year olds account for nearly half of all new infections
  • 15 million AIDS orphans
  • 73,000 live with HIV in the UK
  • UK diagnoses rising by 7,000+ a year

In order to improve their quality of life, Mildmay has a mission to build in-country capacity to fight HIV+AIDS. They do this through the creation and delivery of:

  • model holistic care services for adults and children
  • specialist training and technical assistance to health workers and institutions - thus empowering others to improve standards of care in their communities

Here are some Mildmay stories that illustrate their work
