Growing in faith, sharing Christ’s love

Christian Aid is an agency of churches in Britain and Ireland and is mandated to work on relief, development and advocacy for poverty eradication. Christian Aid’s work is founded on Christian faith, inspired by hope and acts to change an unjust world through charity – a  practical love and care for our neighbours.

For more than sixty years Christian Aid has been providing relief to those hit by disaster, helping people help themselves out of poverty and speaking out against injustice.

Today 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty. Tonight 800 million will go to bed hungry. This year 12 million children will die before their fifth birthday.

It needn’t be like that. We can hope for a better world.  And we have the power to turn that hope into action.

Indeed, since 1950, life expectancy in developing countries has risen by 20 years, access to clean water has doubled, child death rates have halved, and food production has grown 20 per cent faster than population.

However, poverty has not been eroded simply as a result of economic development but partly because people have fought together for justice. They didn’t give in to despair. They hoped – and acted.

One opportunity for personal involvement is Christian Aid Week, Britian's longest running door-to-door fundraising week, which first took place in 1957. This year Chrisitan Aid Week takes place from 13 - 19 May when the familiar red envelope will be dropping through our letterboxes.

If you are a tax payer, you can add even more at no extra cost to yourself by signing the Gift Aid declaration on the envelope. In Christian Aid Week last year across the whole country, the Gift Aid declarations raised £1.2million extra for poor communities.

If you would like to learn more and how to support them in prayer, with donations or by getting involved, visit the web site of Christian Aid >>
